Start planning next year’s vacation!

Believe it or not, we are two months away from 2020. In preparation for the new year, Lonely Planet released Best in Travel 2020, their annual circulation of destinations and experiences in travel. The publication’s top 10 cities to visit in the world in 2020 includes two Middle Eastern cities: Cairo and Dubai.

Here are the top 10 cities to visit next year, according to Lonely Planet:

1 – Salzburg, Austria

The picturesque Austrian city landed on top of Lonely Planet’s 10 cities to visit in 2020 list. Salzburg is the birthplace of iconic composer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Moreover, next summer is the centennial anniversary of the world-famous Salzburg Festival, an annual celebration with music, theatre and cultural events taking place across the city.

2 – Washington DC, United States of America

When thinking of visiting the US, not many people would consider the capital, Washington DC. With 2020 being a presidential election year, a lot of the spotlight will be on the city, and you do not want to miss out on all the action. The capital includes a sheer amount of free activities to partake in, including access to all Smithsonian museums. Not only that, but you could also rent a kayak to paddle by some of the city’s famous monuments.

3 – Cairo, Egypt

The Egyptian capital ranks high on this list, coming in third. A lot of people will be jetting to the city, with the much-anticipated opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum, which is set to become the world’s largest one-civilisation-focused museum. The museum will include treasures from the Egyptian Museum, it will also have 17 labs devoted to rescuing and restoring centuries of Egypt’s relics. Tourists will get to enjoy Egypt’s rich history, all while over-looking the Great Pyramids of Giza.

4 – Galway, Ireland

Not only did the city get a personal shoutout from Ed Sheeran on his Divide album (check out his single, Galway Girl) but it also one of the top 10 cities to visit in 2020. Galway has been named as the European Capital of Culture for 2020, so tourists can expect a lot during their visit.

5 – Bonn, Germany

Before reunification, Bonn was the capital of West Germany, but managed to somewhat fall off the radar. However, with the city being Beethoven’s birthplace, 2020 being his 250th birthday, visitors should expect a year-long celebration.

6 – La Paz, Bolivia

If you are looking to spend your holiday in a bustling city, then La Paz is the place for you. Lonely Planet recommends the tourists visit the Mercado de las Brujas, Museo Nacional del Arte, Iglesia de San Francisco, and La Paz Cemetery.

7 – Kochi, India

Kochi, India has been described as a blend of cultures, where “China and India collide.”Popular sites to visit in Kochi include Paradesi Synagogue, the Chinese Fishing Nets, Hill Palace Museum, Princess Street, and David Hall. “It’s a delightful place to explore, laze in arty cafes and relax at some of India’s finest homestays and heritage hotels,” Lonely Planet wrote about Kochi. “It’s also an important centre for Keralan arts.”

8 – Vancouver, Canada

Many of TV’s biggest series like Pretty Little Liars and Riverdale are mostly shot in Vancouver, Canada. The city is located between the sea and the mountain, so you get the best of both worlds when you visit. Places to visit include: Granville Island Public Market, Gastown, and Grouse Mountain. Moreover, in the winter, the city becomes a hot-stop for skiers.

9 – Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Another Arab city made Lonely Planet’s list, with Dubai taking the ninth spot. Next year will mark the long-awaited six-month-long World Expo 2020, and there is no denying how busy the city will be. But that is not all, also opening in 2020 in Dubai is the Museum of the Future and The World’s European-themed offshore playground, which are credited for the Emirate’s ranking.

10 – Denver, Colorado

The last spot in Lonely Planet’s top 10 cities to visit in 2020 goes out to Denver. The city is known as “The Mile High City” because it’s located exactly one mile above sea level. It is known for its rich culture and activities, and if you are planning a visit, it is recommended to visit these places: Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, the Denver Botanic Gardens, the 16th Street Mall, City Park, or the Denver Zoo.
