Can you tell us about your journey as a graphic designer and calligrapher, and how your Emirati heritage has influenced your work?

As a graphic designer and calligrapher, my journey has been deeply influenced by my Emirati heritage. Holding a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from Zayed University, Dubai, I strive to blend tradition with modernity in my work. My Emirati roots inspire me to incorporate elements of our rich cultural heritage into contemporary designs, especially through the art of Arabic calligraphy.

Your artwork ‘Kohl Expression’ received attention for its innovative use of traditional materials. Can you elaborate on your creative process and inspiration behind this piece?

‘Kohl Expression’ represents my exploration of traditional materials in a contemporary context. By experimenting with palm fronds and kohl, I sought to push the boundaries of Arabic calligraphy and create a piece that reflects both heritage and innovation.

How do you approach blending tradition and modernity in your designs, especially when it comes to Arabic typography?

Blending tradition and modernity in my designs involves a thoughtful process of integrating traditional calligraphy techniques with contemporary aesthetics. I draw inspiration from Emirati heritage, incorporating traditional motifs and themes into my typography while also experimenting with innovative materials and techniques to create a harmonious balance between the past and the present.
