Ok, picture this: You’re at Dubai International Airport, waiting to board a flight to some exotic destination. You look up from your magazine, only to see HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and his son, HH Sheikh Hamdan, strolling past. Your holiday is made before you’ve even left Dubai.

This was a real life scenario for travellers who were lucky enough to be at DXB on Sunday, when the vice president of the UAE and ruler of Dubai paid a surprise visit.

The royal was carrying out an unannounced inspection of the airport, examining the passenger facilities as onlookers watched in amazement.

Sheikh Mohamed began his tour at the departures hall at Concourse 3, where he stopped to review the Emirates baggage-screening facilities and check-in counters.

In videos posted to social media, excited travellers could be seen attempting to take selfies with the Dubai ruler. Sheikh Hamdan, Crown Prince of Dubai, shared a video of his father and his entourage making their way through the airport:

Sheikh Mohammed called upon airport officials to raise the bar in welcoming travellers and simplifying procedures for people flying in and out of the UAE.
