How did the idea to launch the app come about?

The idea came to us (Shaima Amiri and Maryam Abdulaziz) when we were trying to book an appointment for an event and were frustrated with calling salons that we knew, or, had to end up asking people for phone numbers. We then wondered how great it would be if we were able to see which salon or freelancer was free without the trouble of calling, along with browsing through the various services salons were offering, therefore giving us an array of options to choose from.

Do you have a background in tech/beauty?

Tech? Not so much, but, we are extremely lucky to be working with highly-skilled tech teams and tech advisors. Beauty – this is solely our passion. We’re constantly up to date with the latest trends, follow beauty bloggers that are making waves in the industry and are keen on learning new beauty hacks. Based off of these interests, we developed the app and are actively sourcing salons and freelance artists that adhere to these trends and are in the know of what’s going on in the world of beauty.

What does JEEM mean?

Creating an Arabic name for the app with a meaning close to our language was a crucial decision for us. JEEM is a letter in the Arabic alphabet. It is also the first letter in the word “Jamal” which means beauty. The name is a result of the pride that we both have for our heritage, our language, our culture and our country, intertwined with what this app promotes – beauty.

What kinds of services can users access on the app?

Users can access a lot of services such as makeup, hair, spa, etc. In addition to these, other features such as makeup training courses, massage therapy training and fitness training are also available on the app, offering a holistic one-stop-shop.

What are the main advantages of at-home services vs. a salon?

There’s nothing like getting pampered in the comfort of your home. Eliminating the need to make an effort to get ready, step out and drive or walk to a salon, at-home services provide a much needed screen of privacy, instant comfort and zero stress. Booking appointments also becomes less of a hassle as platforms such as JEEM offer instantly available options to users, taking away the task of calling salons individually to check for availability.

Why did you feel now was the time to launch it?

Beauty will forever remain relevant. While any time is a good time to launch an app such as JEEM into the market, there is a considerable spike in salon spend at the moment with beauty bloggers, hacks and trends seeing a significant rise in views and requests. In addition to trends, the reduced desire to go out due to soaring temperatures also makes this the ideal time to launch in.

What was the most challenging aspect of developing the app?

The logistics of creating an app are always challenging. Glitches, bugs, simple addition and deletion of features, tonality, user-friendliness, ease of navigation, all of these tend to take you back to the drawing board over a considerable amount of time. Our journey to creating JEEM was definitely trying, but worth it. To ensure a platform is 100% user-friendly, every step requires a trial and error phase, whether it’s just a simple click or a whole new addition of a button that redirects users to another page.

Name a few of your favourite apps and why you love them?

Our favourite apps have always ticked the box of efficiency. Uber and Deliveroo are top choices as they make the experience as enjoyable and user-friendly as they can and deliver exactly what the customer wants.
