Be cautious, as heavy rain is set to hit the UAE this Thursday on May 2, 2024.

The days ahead will witness moderate to heavy rainfall over scattered areas, occasionally accompanied by lightning and thunder, with a probability of hail, said Dr Ahmed Habib, a weather specialist at the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM).

The National Centre of Meteorology said stormy weather would hit parts of the country from Wednesday night until late on Thursday.

The NCM also said winds would reach speeds of 65kph on Thursday.
Overall, the rain is likely to start from the west on Wednesday night, extending across most areas on Thursday, focusing on areas of the western, coastal and various eastern parts.

Heaviest rainfall in 75 years

Since 1949, the UAE has seen the largest amount of rainfall in the past 75 years making it an exceptional event in the UAE’s climate history since the start of recording climate data.

The weather department recorded the highest rainfall in the Khatm Al Shakla area in Al Ain, reaching 254 mm in less than 24 hrs. The National Centre of Meteorology said that the Shuwaib station had recorded 287.6 mm on March 9, 2016.

Despite the floods and excess water around the city, the country recovered itself from this catastrophic incident.

Dubai’s Crown Prince, Sheikh Hamdan also shared a video depicting how the UAE’s residents came together to come up from this. The royal shared his gratitude for the efforts of the community, and essential workers who helped restore normalcy in Dubai.

The caption for the video said, “A special thank you to all who have contributed to our city. With your efforts, Dubai will remain a beautiful place to be.”
