At the end of last year, HRH Sheikha Mariam bint Khalifa bin Saif Al Nahyan unveiled a dazzling collection ‘Al Otaiba’ which celebrates Emirati pearls. Part of that range is ‘Sea Signs’, paying tribute to pearl divers.
Comprised of necklaces, rings, bracelets and earrings, ‘Sea Signs’ pieces take inspiration from the compass a diver would use look up at the stars to locate where they were. Each item is decorated with sparkling diamond stars, reminiscent of those that Otaiba might’ve looked looked at. Sheikha Mariam wanted to create something to remind the wearer to “always follow her dreams and to never stop the pursuit in finding her own magic”.
“The UAE is me and I am the UAE, this is my story in all its beautiful symbolic ways. Curated is a stack of special creations, coming together piece by piece to share different parts of its treasures both in its gems and meaningful treasures,” she said.
She used Emirati pearls as well as the classic mother of pearl in the handcrafted creations, marrying the past and present. Ideally for layering or wearing as individual statement pieces, Sheikha Mariam has an effortless ability to honour UAE heritage and bring it to the present through modern interpretations.
