‘The legacy he left behind is immeasurable’

Renowned shoe designer Sergio Rossi has died aged 84 due to complications from coronavirus.

Tributes have flooded in for the Italian designer, including from Emirates Woman April cover star Amina Muaddi.

The shoe designer paid tribute to Rossi, who passed away in a hospital in northern Italy on Thursday April 2, with a lengthy post on Instagram.

“RIP to the legend that Sergio Rossi was and will forever remain,” she said. “This is such a sad day for me, for the fashion industry and for women across the globe who he has graced with his creations for entire decades. My sincerest condolences to the Rossi family for their loss.”

In her tribute, Muaddi reflected on her visit to the Sergio Rossi factory at the end of last year as she was set to start producing her shoes in the same factory.

“I felt so much emotion going through his incredible work and looking at the archives that I could barely focus on my meeting,” she said. “The legacy he left behind is immeasurable.

“Thank you Master, may you rest in peace.”

Born in 1935 in the town of San Mauro Pascoli, Rossi inherited a shoemaker and tools which is where his passion for creating footwear began. He built his first factory in his hometown in 1951.

The brand’s CEO, Riccardo Sciutto, also paid tribiute to their “inspiring founder”.

“Today everyone at Sergio Rossi joins me in remembering our dear Sergio, the inspiring founder of our dream,” he said. “Sergio Rossi was a master, and it is my great honour to have met him and gotten to present him the archive earlier this year.

“His vision and approach will remain our guide in the growth of the brand and the business.”

Italy has been one of the worst affected countries by coronavirus. There have been over 120,00 confirmed cases, with over 20,000 recoveries and around 15,000 deaths.
