As many across the globe continue to step up in order to help Lebanon in the wake of the Beirut blast, luxury fashion house Chanel has announced it will be making a sizeable donation to four local charities.

The French Maison, which is one of the first major fashion houses to donate to Lebanon, confirmed in a statement that it would be donating $700,000 (Dhs2.57 million) to Lebanese charities helping those who have been affected by the tragic event.

“The catastrophic explosion in Beirut sent Lebanon, a country already impacted by political unrest, economic instability and the current COVID-19 crisis, into further distress and suffering,” the statement read.

“Chanel has a local presence and valued long-standing partners in Lebanon, some of whom are deeply impacted.”

The four charities that will be receiving a split of the total donation includes: the Lebanese Red Cross, Amel Association, ACTED and UNICEF.

The French fashion house confirmed that $100,000 would be donated to the Amel Association, while the Lebanese Red Cross, ACTED and UNICEF would all receive $200,000.

Many high profile figures recently donated to help victims in Beirut including George and Amal Clooney, which holds a special place in the human rights lawyer’s heart as it was where she was born.

The couple donated $100,000 (approximately Dhs367,000) to three separate charities – Lebanese Red Cross, Impact Lebanon and Baytna Baytak.

Meanwhile, Bella Hadid has not only donated but has pointed her fans in the right direction of where they can donate to help Beirut immediately.

In an informative post she shared to Instagram recently, the model not only encouraged her followers to think of the long-term needs of Lebanon, but also urged them to do research when exploring donation options.

The catastrophic blast in Beirut has killed at least 135 people and left an estimated 6,000 people injured. According to a previous statement by the Governor of Beirut, 300,000 people have been left homeless and that up to 85 per cent of grain stocks in Lebanon have been destroyed.
