As the people of Beirut continue to process the catastrophic tragedy that has shattered their lives and their homes, people from around the world are doing what they can to support the recovery efforts.

George and Amal Clooney are the latest public figures to stand in solidarity with the Lebanese people by donating $100,000 (approximately Dhs367,000) to three separate charities – Lebanese Red Cross, Impact Lebanon and Baytna Baytak.

The human rights lawyer, who was born in Beirut, and her husband encouraged others to “help in anyway they can”.

“We’re both deeply concerned for the people of Beirut and the devastation they’ve faced in the last few days,” the couple said in a statement obtained by PA.

At least 135 people have been killed and up to 5,000 injured with homes and businesses shattered following the explosions in the port area on Tuesday.

Under the directive from Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, UAE sent 30 tonnes of aid to the Lebanese capital on Wednesday.

“His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Ruler of Dubai, ordered the aid to be sent immediately on his personal aircraft in response to the devastating blast which rocked Beirut,” said Mohammed Ibrahim Al Shaibani, Chairman of the Supreme Committee for the Supervision of IHC.
