Because we all love a scented candle.

Scent can have a powerful effect on your mood, and on the feel of your home, says Rituals innovation director Niki Schilling. The fragrance expert gave us her tips for mood-boosting scents.

How can fragrances have an influence on our mood?

Fragrances are one of the most important elements of our product as scents have a particular influence on your mood and nervous system. Even in ancient China, 5,000 years ago, people burned flowers and herbs at home for more energy, healing or rest.

I have different fragrances in my house and choose a different scent every day intuitively. Every day you are different and you need something else. We’ve just launched four new scents (Tangerine Tea, Savage Garden, Precious Amber and Wild Fig) for our candles, scented candles and interior perfumes.

Which fragrances cause which emotions?

The power of  fragrance is unmistakable. Sometimes it depends per person as a fragrance can be linked to a personal memory. For example, you will never forget the perfume of your grandmother. A fragrance can conjure up  long-forgotten memories, give you the confidence to make a personal statement and influence your mood and emotions.

Besides this there are also fragrances that give a certain emotion scientifically, for example uplifting scents like the Ritual of Happy Buddha evoke happy feelings aroused by the ingredients sweet orange and cedar wood. Whereas the Ritual of Dao contains the calming ingredients yi yi ren and white lotus which leads to a relaxing mood.

Another collection that arouse relaxing feelings is the Ritual of Sakura which blends blends the sweetness of cherry blossom with nourishing organic rice milk, to make each day feel like a new beginning.

Which fragrances relax?

Fragrances that contain calming ingredients will help you to relax. For example, the Ritual of Dao which is inspired by an ancient Chinese philosophy centred on achieving the perfect harmony between Yin and Yang.

Which fragrances revitalize?

The Ritual of Anahata contains the ingredients rosewood and pine, which refreshes your spirit and is an excellent mood elevator that has been traditionally used in many cultures. The collection is inspired by the ancient charka philosophy from India. Anahata, the heart chakra, is home to compassion and kindness, it allows you to open your heart and let its energy flow freely.

Which fragrances can make us happy?

The Laughing Buddha collection is infused with sweet orange and the mood enhancing power of cedar wood. In ancient China, 1,100 years ago, the Laughing Buddha was a famous monk whose legendary smile brought happiness wherever he went. For centuries, rubbing his belly has symbolised good luck and prosperity.

This tradition is the inspiration for a collection of uplifting products that celebrate his positivity. If I shower with the Happy Buddha shower foam in the morning, it brings a touch of happiness to my day because of the uplifting scent.
