The RTA initiative is part of a plan to make Dubai a disability-friendly city by 2020.

Five years ago, the Dubai government launched the “My Community is a Home for All” initiative which aimed to make Dubai an inclusive and disability-friendly city by 2020.

And now, the Roads and Transport Authority has announced measures undertaken to make the emirate’s metro and tram stations, buses and taxis more accessible to the disabled. They’re also training their staff on how to deal with people with disabilities.

In a further push towards that 2020 goal, the RTA’s Dubai Taxi Corporation has launched the ‘Al Khair Ride’ programme in association with Al Futtaim Motors Company as part of its Year of Zayed initiative.

According to a report on the Gulf News website, people of determination can book a free taxi ride round-the-clock to the airport or any other place in Dubai as well.

These taxis are fitted with special equipment which allows the disabled and their equipment, like wheelchairs, to be mounted into the high-riding taxi vans with ease. The drivers of these cabs have also been trained to dealing with and helping these passengers.
