When it comes to history, the Middle East has got thousands of years to offer. However, it is full of incredible historical sites that we know little about. Apart from the Pyramids in Egypt and Petra in Jordan, here are five must-visit monuments in the region.
Ruins of Tyre – Lebanon

The Phoenician city of Tyre, is located on the southern coast of Lebanon. With a history dating back to 2750 BC, Tyre is home to many ruins that were found during the Roman period. In 332 BC, the city was conquered by Alexander the Great, now known as the “siege of Tyre”. So, there is no need to jet to Italy in search of Roman history, Lebanon has got some of its own and it will take your breath away.
Ajloun Castle – Jordan

This castle, located on a hilltop dates back to the 12th-century. Ajloun Castle was built during Ottoman rule, under Sultan and military leader Saladin. Over the years, the castle has undergone many renovations that have left it with few of its original features. You can explore many areas of the castle and visit the exhibition inside that displays many fascinating artefacts from various time periods. Besides that, the view from the castle is surreal as its strategic location provides visitors with incredible views of the Jordan Valley and the surrounding desert.
Riffa Fort – Bahrain

Even though this site is commonly known as Riffa Fort, because of its location, it is actually named the Sheikh Salman bin Ahmed Al-Fateh Fort. This historical Bahraini site was built in 1812, though some sources say it dates back to the 17th century. Inside this incredible piece of architecture, you will find a small museum, which will surely leave you wanting more.
Siwa Oasis – Egypt

While most people travel to Egypt to see the Pyramids, we believe that the Siwa Oasis needs to be on their radar. It is one of Egypt’s most isolated settlements with a small population, mostly Berbers, who have their own unique culture and language. The oldest monuments in the oasis, such as the Temple of the Oracle, date back to the 26th dynasty when Egypt was invaded by the Assyrians.
Al Hoota Cave – Oman

You wouldn’t believe that this cave, which is estimated to be over two million years old is in Oman. Located at the foot of Jabal Shams, Al Hoota Cave is a must visit location. It is one of the most underrated historical sites in the Middle East.
