New year, new shows

January 2020 is finally here, which means two things: the start of a new decade and brand new content from Netflix. With every new month, the streaming service removes shows and movies to make way for brand new content.

Here is what is coming to Netflix this January:

Spinning Out

Release date: 1 Jan

This new series follows Kaya Scodelario as Kat Baker, an up-and-coming, high-level single skater who’s about to turn in her skates after a disastrous fall took her off the competition track. When Kat seizes an opportunity to continue her career as a pair skater with a talented bad-boy partner, she risks exposing a fiercely kept secret that could unravel her entire life.

The Circle

Release date: 1 Jan

The first four episodes of the American reality series were added to Netflix on January 1st. A little like Big Brother meets Black Mirror, in this series the contestants, or “players”, all move into an apartment building. However, the contestants will never meet face-to-face during the course of the competition, as they will each live in their own individual apartment. They will communicate solely using their profiles on a specially-designed social media app, giving them the ability to portray themselves in any way they choose.

Thieves Of The Wood

Release date: 2 Jan

This period-drama is set in The Flanders region of Belgium in 1747. It tells the story of a man who unites the populace to fight against the oppressive regime.

Anne with an E – Season 3

Release date: 3 Jan

The third and final season of the show has been released after it was sadly canceled by Netflix. The show, set in the late 19th century, follow brother and sister Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert who decide to take on an orphan boy to help out around their ancestral farm. When Matthew goes to pick the child up at the railway station, he finds not a boy, but a high-spirited and talkative girl, Anne Shirley, who gets off to a rocky start but slowly wins over those around her.

Dracula

Release date: 4 Jan

This three-episode series follows Dracula from his origins in Eastern Europe to his battles with Van Helsing’s descendants and beyond. Netflix’s description reads: “The Count Dracula legend transforms with new tales that flesh out the vampire’s gory crimes — and bring his vulnerability into the light.”

Chilling adventures of Sabrina – Season 3

Release date: 24 Jan

Some of us may have grown up with Sabrina the Teenage Witch, but Netflix’s take on Sabrina Spellman is a much darker one. The third season is returning this month, and if the previous season are anything to go by, then we are in for a ride.
