Deira Mall is set to open in 2021.

Shopping is easily our favourite form of cardio, and one much-anticipated development looks set to give us the workout of our lives.

Deira Mall will claim the title of the Middle East’s biggest mall when it opens in 2021, developers say, with work about to kick off on the Dhs6.1 billion retail hub.

Yes, it will usurp The Dubai Mall for the amount of leasable space available (4.5 million square feet compared to the Downtown spot’s 3.77 million square feet), although the latter will still be the world’s largest mall in terms of total area.

(It’s a niggly point, but basically Deira Mall will have more space rented out to shops, restaurants and the like, whereas The Dubai Mall has more complete space including atriums and open areas).

Overall, the Deira Mall—built on the manmade Deira Islands—will feature more than 1,000 shops, cafes, restaurants and entertainment outlets, plus a retractable glass roof that will open during winter.

Construction is set to begin in the first quarter of this year, and finished up in around three years’ time.

“Deira Mall combines cutting edge design, world-class facilities and a stunning location to bring a new dimension to Dubai’s retail sector,” said Nakheel’s chairman, Ali Rashid Lootah.

“With its top-flight shopping, dining and entertainment offering, the mall will provide endless attractions for residents of Deira Islands, the wider UAE community and the millions of tourists who visit Dubai each year.”

The mall won’t be the only attraction on Deira Islands either, with the coastal development set to welcome 50 residential and hotel towers, plenty of green space and Deira Islands Night Souk.

That latter concept is one to get particularly excited about; not only will it be the world’s largest night market with 5,300 shops and almost 100 cafes and restaurants, but it’s also slated to open later this year.

We’re starting a separate savings account marked ‘Deira Islands’ now in anticipation…
