We really have a royal family like no other here in the UAE.

We’ve talked before about Sheikha Mozah Al Maktoum. The young Emirates pilot is the first member of Dubai’s ruling family to take to the skies, and we think she’s kind of incredible.

It looks like we aren’t alone in that, either. HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum (happy birthday, by the way) has posted a photo of the two of them together in a clear show of support for his cousin.

Very cool. Judging by the prince’s caption, we’re thinking Sheikha Mozah might have just passed another aviation milestone and become a first officer. She’s been ticking them up over the last couple of years, first with her training in Arizona last April, all the way to her first passenger flight in February.

While she’s not a frequent poster on Instagram, a look back over her archives includes the view from the pointy end of the plane. And in September, she shared a photo of her with a fellow young woman pilot. Girl power, to say the least.

Sheikha Mozah flies with Emirates, who are known for their forward-thinking approach in terms of gender balance. Women make up 44 per cent of their workforce, and they’re committed to getting more of them into the cockpit. At present, only around 4,000 of the world’s 130,000 pilots are women, so it’s cool to see Emirates making a change.

“We are proud of our women colleagues and their immense contribution to the growth and success of the airline,” said Abdulaziz Al Ali, Emirates’ executive vice president of human resources, said on International Women’s Day this year.

“We hope that they can continue to inspire and be role models for girls and women across the globe interested in pursuing careers in aviation.”
