Rashida made history when she, along with Ilhan Omar became the first elected female Muslim officials in the US House of Representatives to represent the Mid-Western districts in Minneapolis, Minnesota and Wayne Country, Michigan respectively.

With less than a month to go for the new Congress members to be sworn in, the Democrat shared a picture on Instagram of her outfit of choice and captioned it, “Sneak peek: This is what I am wearing when I am sworn into Congress. #PalestinianThobe #ForMyYama”

The thobe that Rashida is set to wear is a traditional hand-embroidered dress, which is an integral part of the Palestinian identity as it is considered their traditional attire. The stitching on the gown is an important detail as most villages have their own style which is unique to them woven into the dress.

The 42-year-old was born in the US to Palestinian parents, and although she ran unopposed, her election made waves as she is the first Palestinian to win a seat in the US Congress.
