Start your engines…

You might feel like a street racer when you realise you need to cross three lanes of traffic to get to your exit on Sheikh Zayed Road, but there’s one woman who definitely has us all beat.

Yas Marina has just named its first ever Queen of the Street drag-racing champion. The title went to Russian driver Olena Bublik, who finished third overall and as the top female driver.

It was Bublik’s second year competing at the high-octane event, which took place at the Abu Dhabi circuit late last week.

“My driving skills have improved from last year. I am very pleased to win the title,” she said.

Bublik competed against drivers from around the UAE and GCC, as well as her native Russia, to gain her win. She scored a total of 1,558 points.

Judges praised Bublik’s confident, determined performance, and noted she faced stiff competition.

We’ll be thinking of Bublik next time we struggle with reversing into a park. Impressive stuff.

Other winners on the night included Saleh Mohamed Salah Uddin, who won Bublik’s super street open category, and Yousef Mohamed Yousef, who was named King of the Street for his win in the 4×4 super street SUV category.

Speaking of Yas Marina, you will have heard that The Weeknd is confirmed as the first artist to headline one of this year’s after-race concerts.

The Canadian R&B artist, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, will perform songs like Can’t Feel My Face and Starboy come November.

See you in the stands.
