When backstage at the major fashion shows, swatting up on the biggest beauty trends, there were a few people we expected to see. Make-up artists. Check. Hair stylists. Check. Nail technicians. Check. Facialists… sorry? We’re at Fashion Week not a spa. But with the resounding beauty trend still about bare, naked skin that glowed, serious attention to skin was being made. And we’re not talking about ‘no makeup make-up’, that requires, ironically, a lot of make-up. Skin was being prepped and primed with complexion boosting products to make it look flawless, poreless and with such a unified skin tone that nothing else was required.

For us normal folk who need, and use, make-up to cover up our skin imperfections, the barely-there trend can be daunting. We don’t have a team of skin experts hiding out in our bathroom to transform our complexions. But panic not, for we are here to show you how a little extra time spent on your skincare regime, as well as stocking up on the latest skincare wonders suited for your skin type, can result in supermodel looking skin; no make-up required.

The first thing you need is time. Start by cleansing properly. “This is by far the most important step of your routine,” says Caroline Hirons. “If you are consistently cleansing with wipes, aka moving the dirt around your face and then applying a really expensive serum/moisturiser on top, you are wasting your money. And your time.”

Next, must come exfoliation. “Daily exfoliation is the quickest way to improve the appearance of your skin,” says skin expert, Tom Ogden. It kick starts cell renewal; the process where dead skin cells shed to allow young, fresh, plump cells to come to the surface. It’s also a great way of reducing age spots, acne scarring and any pigmentation issues.

A mask follows. “Their thicker consistency contains higher concentrations of active ingredients and as you leave them on the skin for longer, gives them time to get to work and really make a difference to your skin,” says consultant dermatologist, Dr Nick Lowe.

Serums are skin problem solvers and therefore perhaps the most important weapon in your perfect, bare skin arsenal. Their small molecular size allow deeper penetration than any other product and literally get to the root of the issue. They can be used as a final step or penultimately if skin needs extra hydration from a moisturiser or perfecting with a primer.
