With veils being banned in public schools in 2004 in France, the French Senate has voted to ban the hijab for anyone under 18-years old.
The move was proposed on March 30, 2021 falling under the proposed Separatism bill.
As the French senate voted in favour of “prohibition in the public space of any conspicuous religious sign by minors and of any dress or clothing which would signify an interiorization of women over men.”, the country has always been in the proposition that its secular symbols help with to uphold the notion of individualism.
As per tradition, many Muslim women wear the hijab for religious purposes as they cover their hair from the age of puberty which is usually prior to the age of 18-years-old.
However, the latest move from France has been met with severe criticism.
Amani al Khatahtbeh, founder and activist of Muslim Women’s Day, came out in support of her “French sisters”, condemning the country’s Islamaphobia.
“My French sisters, know that we see you, stand with you and fight with you against the globalized Islamophobia that brought us here,” she said.

France’s President Emmanuel Macron, has also previously shared his thoughts on the hijab and how it differs from the French ideas of separating state and religion.
However, the ban has only been passed by the French Senate and is yet to be passed fully into law.
