The magic of couture hasn’t ended just because the shows had to be postponed due to the global pandemic, in fact it’s more mesmerising than ever, especially at Dior.

This season Maria Grazia Chiuri chose to tell her fairy tale of couture through ‘Le Mythe Dior’ film. The dreamlike production features a miniature collection, each piece is around 40cm in height, that arrives in a Dior trunk that embodies 30 Avenue Montaigne. It then transforms into a dolls house in front of some beautiful nymphs and other mystical creatures of the forest.

Directed by Matteo Garrone, the film takes cue Théâtre de la Mode – a 1945 travelling exhibit of small-scale fashion mannequins during World War II. By the end of the movie, nymphs wear the full-size versions of these hand-made creations.

Grazia Chiuri was inspired by nature and transformation as well as artists Lee Miller, Dora Maar and Jacqueline Lamba. Certain pieces display spectacular gradations of red while others mimic the colours of paintings by Leonora Carrington and Dorothea Tanning. Art and fashion have always been best friends.

“Surrealist images manage to make visible what is in itself invisible. I’m interested in mystery and magic, which are also a way of exorcising uncertainty about the future,” Grazia Chiuri says.

The craftsmanship is as impressive on small-scale models as it is in full size. Day looks include suits in men’s fabrics of exceptional architecture, while gowns and dresses feature 3D flowers, feathers and embroidery across flowing and structured shapes.

It might not be the usual way we see couture, but it sure is fantastical.
