Pro make-up artist, celeb favourite and founder of game-changing tool Beautyblender, Rea Ann Silva reveals her tricks, tips and timeless advice for complexion perfection…
Tell us how the beauty blender came about, did you have a few handmade prototypes first before you created the shape we now know?
As one of the first make-up artists to work in high-def, I was desperately in need of a tool that would apply make-up so perfectly that the actors I was working with would not look overly made up, but still perfect. The shape has always been the same, but in the beginning I was cutting them by hand. They are still handmade, but we have figured out a way to make that possible on a large scale.
Was it first used backstage or on celebrity clients?
Beautyblender was ‘born and raised’ on set of the first TV show filmed in high-def with not only my make-up artist peers, but my celebrity clientele as well. I was fortunate to have that access because I believe that it has been the combined support of the two that have made Beautyblender such a success. I am so grateful.
What is it about the shape that helps leave a flawless finish?
The shape allows 360 degrees of edgeless, flawless application in varying shapes and contours of the face. The smaller end can target smaller areas and the larger end is great for larger surface areas. Because of the shape it is so quick and so easy to apply your make-up perfectly.
What foundations best work with the beauty blender?
Beautyblender does not discriminate. It works wonders on any complexion product: liquid, powder, cream and more.
Aside from flawless foundation, what other make-up products do you use on clients who are in front of an HD camera?
I have my favourite make-up products, of course. Too many to list, but I love Makeup Forever HD foundation.”
How do you clean the blender? How often should you be cleaning your beauty tools?
I recommend cleaning Beautyblender after each use. That will not only keep it clean and sanitary, but also will extend the life of the sponge. We have created specially formulated Blendercleansers for that purpose. And the Blendercleanser works very well with brushes too!
With the party season coming up, what products should every woman be adding to her beauty bag?
Well, of course Beautyblender! But the holidays are all about sparkle and glowing skin. I love Stila All Over Shimmer and I love a festive lip, so I usually have YSL lip colour with me. And of course a travel perfume and yummy mints.
How does applying make-up for film and TV differ from applying it on the red carpet?
You need more make-up on screen than you would want on the red carpet, there is more attention paid to detail, texture and clean lines. Perfection is essential for faces that are projected 30ft high and wide!
As we are based in the Middle East, what can we do to stop our make-up melting off in the heat?
Blot away shine regularly! And you may see something for that from us soon, but don’t tell anyone you heard it from me. Anti-shine and make-up setting and refreshing products are a must, too.
How many products make up your daily beauty routine?
I am a make-up artist, so I own endless products, but the three things I use everyday are concealer, mascara and lip colour.
What’s the most common piece of beauty advice you give to your celebrity clients?
Use Beautyblender, get your sleep, try to drink a lot of water and use an effective skincare regimen that works for your skin’s challenges!
