Iconic fashion designer Issey Miyake has died aged 84 after battling liver cancer.

Known for his notable contributions to the fashion industry, Miyake’s pieces have challenged conventional design materials since the 1980s having worked with materials from plastic to metal.

With his pleating process becoming his signature, this revolutionary designer combined technology with fashion making his work known the globe over.

He founded his design studio in 1970, to produce practical designs that are now put on the global fashion map.

As we say goodbye to one of the most talented designers in the industry, we dig through the archives to present some of his most iconic designs.

Technology in motion

One of Miyake's most iconic collections and shows was for SS95. He redesigned the traditional pleats and created Minaret dresses inspired by paper lanterns and Paul Poiret’s famous lampshade dress. The models walked barefoot on the runway and bounced up and down as the pastel-hued outfits became a fashion statement during that time.

Steve Jobs

Apart from spearheading one of the biggest tech companies of a generation, Apple's founder Steve Jobs was also known for his distinctive black turtle neck sweaters which were designed by Miyake. Designed to appeal to wearers of any age, this timeless turtle neck made Steve Jobs order 100 of them to have enough for the rest of his life at $175 (Dhs643) each.

Pea pod inspired

Taking inspiration from the world around him, Miyake’s FW23 pieces follow a pea pod formation. With three connecting round pieces, the looks use pleating technology and traditional technique, to resemble the same. The material is bound in a specific way to minimise the bleed of the dyes.

Spongy bag

These timeless bags are made from the same material as spongy and come in a plethora of colours. Created for his SS22 collection, the bag is made through a series of knits that expand and shrink like a sponge. Designed from zigzag stitching, this strong twisted thread comes in one size and can be washed without wrinkling.

Pleats please

His signature collection was created by wrapping fabrics between layers of paper and putting them into a heat press for each garment to hold their pleated shape. To celebrate the freedom of movement, his SS20 show expressed how fluidity and form join hands. Since then he also introduced the concept of diagonal pleats.

Trademark Bao Bao bag

Adopting a minimalist approach to bags, this expandable Bao Bao can maintain a slim profile when carrying a few items. With expandable side gussets, this unique design is crafted with tessellating triangular structures that shift when moved to create three dimensional forms.

Sony vest

In 1981, Sony pivoted its approach to fashion and wanted to create a uniform for their employees to wear with pride. Akio Morita, Sony’s chairman, implemented the idea and requested Miyake Design Studio to design a uniform for the company. As a great piece of history, this signature uniform is remembered until today.
