Celebrate Thai New Year with a feast

Pai Thai

This month sees the South East Asian nation celebrate Songkran, the annual water festival, and several Thai eateries throughout the city are getting into the spirit of things. We’ve rarely had a bad green curry anywhere in Dubai, but you’re hard-pressed to beat Pai Thai with its waterfront setting. The restaurant is putting on a special three-course menu to mark the occasion, which includes crab dumplings and pandan-leaf-wrapped chicken, plus there’s traditional Thai dancing to enjoy while tucking in.

Pai Thai, Madinat Jumeirah, Al Sufouh, Dubai. Dhs280, special menu available 6.30pm to 11.30pm until April 23. Tel: (04) 432 3232. More info on website

See the Blue Man Group in action

blue man group

It’s an eccentric concept, granted, but these three bald, blue-painted, non-speaking men consistently get rave reviews for their drumming performances. The trio are in Dubai this week, where they’ll be putting on a musical show that also weaves in comedy, art and technology. This is one for solo theatregoers, couples and families alike.

Dubai Opera, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard, Downtown Dubai. Dhs195 to Dhs595. Thursday 5.30pm and 8.30pm, Friday and Saturday 4.30pm and 7.30pm. Tel: (04) 440 8888. More information and tickets on website.

tory burch

Tory Burch is taking to the road this season, and packing some of their top SS17 pieces in a floral-printed trailer and cruising around the UAE. The unique concept will hit Dubai and Abu Dhabi between now and April 29, and you can find it in City Walk this weekend. So if your wardrobe is crying out for some summer-ready prints and garden tea-party vibes, you might want to head down…

Get a taste of history

Bord Eau

Some may find it a little morbid, but plenty find it historically enticing, as the first version of this sold out two years ago. Abu Dhabi’s Shangri-La is again marking the sinking of the doomed Titanic with a lavish 10-course dinner, presenting the last menu served to the ship’s first-class passengers. The Bord Eau restaurant will transformed to resemble the opulent top-class cabin, with plenty of jazz in the background. The fine-dining menu will be served up by two-Michelin-starred chef Mansour Memarian, and guests are asked to dress in style (and book in advance).

Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi, April 14 and 15, 6,30pm, Dhs469 per person (excluding taxes). Tel: (02) 509 8555. shangri-la.com.

Hear from a real NASA scientist

dan goods

The  annual -ING Creative Festival never fails to put on an impressive line-up, and this year is no exception. The Alserkal Avenue event – which runs throughout the whole weekend – will feature talks and workshops by faces from huge names, including Disney, Google, National Geographic and the Museum of Modern Art. We’re most looking forward to hearing from Dan Goods, Visual Strategist for NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, on Saturday, who’s promised to “learn and share with the Middle Eastern public about the awe and wonder of our human existence”.

Alserkal Avenue, Al Quoz, one day pass Dhs715, 9am to 10.10pm all weekend. Buy tickets here. For a full schedule of talks and workshops head here.
