He takes over from Diane von Furstenberg.

Tom Ford has stepped into a prestigious role at the Council of Fashion Designers of America and his vision could mean great news for designers in the Middle East and beyond.

His appointment will be effective as of January 1 2020, replacing designer Diane von Furstenberg who held the position for 13 years. In a statement to the Business of Fashion, Ford said:”

“Coming back from Europe, what’s stunning to me was the isolation I feel here. I feel that America is one of the most isolated countries in the world. We’re very inward looking. What American fashion needs to become in order to be more relevant in the world is to think of itself as not just American but as international.”

Expanding internationally could potentially mean a more open environment for designers around the world to step into the American market, particularly at New York Fashion Week which Tom Ford, according to reports, is looking to reinvent.

The designer has won seven CFDAs in the past and is the first to open NYFW – Gigi Hadid walked in his Fall 2019 collection in February.
