Janelle Monae stole the show in a ROYGBIV-inspired Nicolas Jebran gown.

The stars brought out their most daring looks for this year’s BET Awards, but it was a Lebanese designer who was behind the outfit on everybody’s lips.

Jebran is known for his diva-worthy designs, having dressed the likes of Taylor Swift, Beyonce, and Katy Perry, and his rainbow gown worn by Janelle Monae on the red carpet was a true showstopper.

The colourful creation featured an embroidered corset and frothy circle skirt which covered the full spectrum.

The American singer – who performed her hits ‘Django Jane’ and ‘I Like That’ at the awards show – completed the look with a black conductor’s hat and a bedazzled clutch.

While many complimented Monae on her gorgeous gown, the artist took one fan to task after they praised her for “dressing like a lady”.

“Thank you for dressing like a lady! Unlike some of the other outfits I saw! Class act you are!!!!” the fan commented on Instagram.

Monae responded: “Hey that’s not a compliment to me love. I’m not into respectability politics. And no matter what we (the ‘others’ you are referring to) wear we define our own terms what is ‘lady like’. Naked, half naked, fully clothed, etc. we are all to be respected and should not be made to feel less than especially by other women.”

Rainbow dress aside, we love that Monae is encouraging us to let our true colours shine through.
