A historic moment

Last Sunday, South Africa’s Zozibini Tunzi made history as she was crowned as 2019’s Miss Universe in Atlanta. Taking the title from the Filipino beauty queen Catriona Gray, Zozibini stunned in a diamond tiara designed by a Lebanese jewellery designer.

Congratulations are in order as the newly minted Miss Universe managed to beaut out 89 other contestants for the crown. The PR-professional-turned-pageant-queen managed to beat out competition which included Miss Egypt Diana Hamed to become the first black South African to win the crown. Not only that, but Zozibini is also the first black woman to win the prestigious title since Angola’s Leila Lopes, who was crowned Miss Universe in 2011.

After the incredible win, the beauty queen took to Instagram to share some inspiring words. She wrote: “Tonight a door was opened and I could not be more grateful to have been the one to have walked through it. May every little girl who witnessed this moment forever believe in the power of her dreams and may they see their faces reflected in mine. I proudly state my name Zozibini Tunzi, Miss Universe 2019!”

Zozibini shined on stage in a diamond embellished crown, designed by Lebanon’s fine jewellery label Mouawad. The crown was unveiled ahead of the final and was described by the designer as “a symbol of strength in diversity and of the power of women.” A perfect fit for a historic night.
