Michelle Obama was named as one of the 14 icons on the list, alongside Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga and Valentino’s Pierpaolo Piccioli, with Beyoncé Knowles-Carter penning a touching tribute expressing her admiration for her strength and ambitions, writing:

“She would’ve been impactful simply by being in the White House, the first African-American First Lady. But she also used her position of power to improve the world around her. Her initiative Reach Higher, for example, encourages young people to complete their education past high school. She empowers all of us to interrogate our fears and surpass greatness.”

The multi-award winning singer also noted Obama’s bravery for writing her best-selling memoir Becoming which could’ve opened her up to criticism, “She has continued to be a portrait of grace.”
