Valentino Garavani, founder of Maison Valentino, has celebrated his 90th birthday.

The legendary designer paved the way in the fashion space throughout his 50-year career.

Garavani burst onto the fashion scene in the 1950s in Paris where he had a number of apprenticeships throughout the years including Balenciaga, Jean Dessès, Guy Laroche and more.

In 1960, he returned to Rome to launch his own eponymous fashion house which is now a leading powerhouse in the industry.

After an impressive and historic career spanning over five decades, he stepped down as creative director of Valentino in 2007. The position is now held by Pierpaolo Piccioli.

In celebration of his milestone birthday, an exhibition of his work will take place at the Teatro Sociale in Voghera, the designer’s hometown, from May 11 to June 5, 2022.

The exhibition, which will be open to the public, will feature exclusive creations designed by the founding creative director from the 1960s to the entire first decade of the 21st century. Sketches, photographs, drawings and other anecdotes will also be on display.

As well as the exhibition, Valentino has unveiled a ‘Happy Birthday Mr. V’ limited edition hoodie that will boast his renowned quote: “I Love Beauty, It’s Not My Fault”, a vivid and ironic summary of an approach to fashion and to life.
