Looks like Halima Aden and Mariah Idrissi are going to have a little bit more company. Modelling agency Storm have made their first signing who wears a hijab.

Londoner Shahira Yusuf marked her entrance to the fashion world by tweeting a series of images from a shoot set up through her new agency.

“I ain’t no kendall jenner but I’m a black muslim girl from east london that’s about to finesse the modelling industry,” the Somali model wrote alongside the shots.

They clearly struck a chord – Yusuf’s post has been liked over 122,000 times.

The replies are full of congratulations and people wishing her good luck. In an industry that’s still working on its diversity, fashion followers are pleased to see Yusuf getting some recognition.

“You are really stunningly gorgeous. Wish you nothing but success queen,” wrote one supporter. Well said – Yusuf is so striking.

Modest fashion had a real moment in 2017, and it looks like that rise is set to continue this year. With the December debut of Modest Fashion Week in Dubai, we’re anticipating a whole lot more news along these lines.

And we’ll be keeping our eye out for a visit to the UAE from Yusuf, too. Aden and Idrissi both stopped by in 2017, and with Dubai’s status as a fashion hub for the Middle East, it’d make sense.
