So with a CV like that, it’s little wonder that Malala Yousafzai is an inspiration to many.

In fact, the 20-year-old activist and education campaigner, who in 2012 was shot in an assassination attempt by Taliban gunmen, has ranked among a list of the world’s most admired females.

An online study conducted by YouGov across 35 countries polled more than 37,000 people on which women they held in high acclaim.

Heading up the list was actress and celebrated humanitarian Angelina Jolie, while the top five was rounded out by Michelle Obama, Oprah Winfrey, Queen Elizabeth II and Hillary Clinton.

Yousafzai – who was named the youngest ever United Nations Messenger of Peace in 2017  – came in at No 7, the same position she held last year.

Just a couple of months ago, the student announced she had joined forces with Apple’s chief executive officer, Tim Cook, to help make quality education available for young women around the world.

Also making the top 20 for the first time ever were three Indian film stars: Aishwarya Rai (No 11), Priyanka Chopra (No 12) and Deepika Padukone (No 13).

Jazbaa star Rai is a former Miss World winner renowned for her charitable work, Chopra has a leading role in US TV series Quantico, making her the first South Asian to headline an American network drama series, and Filmfare Award winner Padukone is one of Bollywood’s most famous faces.
