Sure, autumn is a relative term here, but any excuse will do…
When you live somewhere like Dubai, where the end of summer means good weather, seasonal trends get a little out of order. The usual vibe of plummy, deeper lipstick tones for the cooler months doesn’t make quite so much sense when this is the time of year when you’re going to be hitting the beach.
Even so, we’ve been finding ourselves the darker lip colours in our collections of late. There’s something very compelling about a burgundy lip even when it’s coming up on 40 degrees still.
Here are a few of our favourites for your consideration. From matte
MAC Matte Lipstick in Diva (Dhs104)
This dark red-burgundy shade is a classic for a reason. In MAC’s signature matte-but-not-dry finish, it’s the lipstick you borrowed from your more sophisticated friend at age 19 and now still reach for as an independent adult. Wear it with lightly bronzed cheeks and loads of mascara.
YSL Rouge Pur Couture Lipstick in Prune Avenenue (Dhs186)
Not the sexiest name, but this dark berry purple is seriously hot. It works well as a stain, too, when applied lightly over balm. Wear it with a thin winged liner and you have a night time look that won’t need touching up every five minutes.
Chanel Rouge Allure Silky Lipstick in 109 Rouge Noir (Dhs160)
This is the lipstick version of one of the most beloved nail polishes ever, and it’s just great as the shade it was made to match. Go forth with the confidence of knowing Mia Wallace would approve of your choice.
By Terry Sheer Hyaluronic Sheer Rouge Hydra Balm Fill & Plump Lip in Sangria Appeal (Dhs135)
Not only does the name of this make us a little thirsty, it’s formulated to be just as quenching on your lips. By Terry products are all made with ingredients that actually do your skin good, rather than just sitting on top of it, so you can feel good about using this sheer little number. A great starting point if dark lipstick seems a bit terrifying, or if you want a daytime option.
NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Lonely Heart (Dhs135)
If you haven’t given brown lipstick a go, due to its unfortunate ’90s reputation, this is the perfect product to try. Matte yet moisturising, these NARS pencils are a dream to use. Stick with champagne and gold eyes, and you’re away laughing.
