Yesterday, a massive explosion rocked Beirut and has left at least 78 people dead and up to 4,000 injured.

HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashed Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai shared a heartfelt message of support with the people of Lebanon, writing:

“Our condolences to our beloved people in Lebanon… God have mercy on those who have moved to you… God be kind on Lebanese people.”

His tweet was then re-shared by other members of the royal family, including his son HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai, and sister HE Sheikha Fatima Rashed Al Maktoum.

In addition, last night the Burj Khalifa lit up with the colours of the Lebanese flag as a gesture of support of the people of Lebanon.

A two-week state of emergency has been recommended by President Michel Aoun as he also declared a three-day mourning period. He added that the government would release 100 billion lira of emergency funds.

Videos have been circulating news channels as well as social media and show fire and smoke coming from the port area before the blast, which is followed by a mushroom cloud. The blast was said to be heard 240km away on the island of Cyprus. Authorities have blamed a supply of reactive chemical ammonium nitrate for the explosion.

Hospitals have been left overwhelmed, while rescuers and members of the public try to uncover more people beneath the rubble. The surrounding area is reported to be severely damaged with collapsed buildings, shattered glass and cars covering the streets.
