Over the weekend, the United Arab Emirates saw its first virtual mass wedding occur.

One hundred grooms across the country gathered to join in a virtual wedding – five venues across the emirates played host to 20 grooms – and they also got a huge surprise, a congratulations from His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

“Simplicity in weddings deepens its blessings,” His Highness said. “I hope that there is always simplicity and ease in these matters.”

With social distancing measures at all five venues in place, the ceremonies were organised by the Ministry of Community Development to celebrate the marriages of the grooms and brides from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah.

It’s an aim for the authority for mass weddings to become a go-to for young Emirati newlyweds in order to help them financially.

Hessa bint Essa Buhumaid, the Minister of Community Development, outlined that since 1998, 195 mass ceremonies have taken place in the UAE, with the total number of people marrying under the ceremony initiative to be 10,000.

“This virtual mass wedding, which gathers together UAE young generations in five different festive sites all over the UAE, reflects the meanings of unity, cohesion, coherence and happiness, and embodies an extended joy for UAE nationals,” she said of the recent mass virtual wedding ceremony.
