Social media has become an ingrained part of society, however, for Selena Gomez, she made the decision to completely step back from the internet altogether over four years ago.
In a candid interview with Good Morning America to discuss the new digital mental health platform, Wondermind, which she co-founded with her mother Mandy Teefey and Daniella Pierson, the actress opened up about how staying away from social media has transformed her life.
“I haven’t been on the internet in four and a half years,” she said.
Ironically, Gomez is one of the most-followed people in the world on Instagram and while her feed is updated regularly, this is done by her team. Gomez herself doesn’t have access to her accounts.
In doing so, the 29-year-old explained she’s “changed [her] life completely”. “I am happier. I am more present, I connect more with people. It makes me feel normal,” she added.

Back in April 2020, Gomez publicly revealed her diagnosis of bipolar disorder for the first time. Reflecting on her own mental health struggles, she hopes to help others through Wondermind, which is a free platform, to know they are not alone.
“If I’m known for anything I hope it’s simply just for the way I care about people,” she explained. “Those days where I don’t want to get out of bed, if I had something like Wondermind, even if it took me a minute to get into it, it’s just there. And there’s something that’s really comforting about that.”
While we may not all be able to completely remove ourselves from social media like Gomez, it’s a good reminder to undergo a digital detox every once in a while and live in the moment.
