Last night the crème de la crème of the big and small screen gathered in Los Angeles for the 2014 Screen Actors Guild Awards. The awards, made by actors, for actors and voted for by actors, is amongst the most respected events on the thespian calendar.
The big winner from cinema was American Hustle, which scooped up Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Accepting the award, Bradley Cooper enthusiastically praised director David O. Russell. “He is an actor’s director,” Bradley said. “He is the reason why we all wanted to become actors as children.”
Dallas Buyers Club was another big winner from the night, with Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto scooping up best actor and best supporting actor for their roles. “I’ve been able to recently find some characters I could humble myself to their humanities and then get feverishly drunk on their obsessions,” McConaughey said after accepting the award.
It’s no surprise that Breaking Bad cleaned up the television trophy cabinet, winning Best Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, and Best Actor award going to star Bryan Cranston. On accepting the award he said, “I’ve had so many rubbish jobs in my life, and the only thing that got me through was dreaming that I could make a living as an actor.”
Rita Moreno was honoured with a life achievement award, presented by Morgan Freeman. “A world-class actress, singer and dancer,” he told the crowd, “Rita’s also a fighter who battled to break free of racial barriers that plagued Hollywood’s golden age.” Rita, 82, accepted the award in her typical eccentric fashion, with a mini-performance and a rude speech.
