Forget the Spice Girls, Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson has plans to create the world’s most popular girl band in music history. Can we get a zig-a-zig-ah…
Despite being a internationally acclaimed actress, Scarlett Johansson has decided to channel her energy into her other passion – music. Believe it or not but the mum-of-one’s desire to launch a super-girl band is not her first foray into the industry. The 30-year-old actress has previously released two music albums – Anywhere I Lay My Head, from 2008, and Break Up, from 2009.
While the star’s sultry tones are bearable, neither album gave her the credibility she desired to crack the music industry. As such her more popular film career dominated her CV, meaning her dreams of being a singing sensation took a back seat.
Scarlett’s new girl band is called The Singles, a five-piece group of which she is the lead singer, naturally. The other members are Este Haim (yes, of Haim fame), Holly Miranda, Kendra Morris and Julia Haltigan.
“The idea was to write super-pop dance music written and performed by girls,” said Scarlett in an interview with Rolling Stone, in which she listed Grimes, the Bangles and the Go-Go’s as inspirations for the band’s sound. “I wanted it to be like those bands: Ultra-pop but also a little ironic, a little in on the joke.”
The Single’s will release their first track, Candy, this weekend and Scarlett is no doubt hoping it will be the single to get her the type of multi-media domination she has always dreamed of.
Of course, Scarlett isn’t the first actress to try to forge a career in both the film and music industry. Jennifer Lopez has managed to succeed in both even though her roles in both probably won’t win her grand awards. Other successful stars to crack the entertainment combo include Cher, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, Beyonce and, most successfully, Jennifer Hudson whose performance in musical Dreamgirls won her an Oscar.
