With things having changed drastically for the rights of women in Saudi Arabia in recent years, including new guidelines implemented in June 2018 allowing women to drive in the country, it appears there is further change coming in relation to marriage rights.
Forced marriage was banned in the Kingdom in 2005, and it appears now a new process is set to be implemented in order to protect women giving them the power to review and consent to marriage contracts, About Her reports from various sources interview by Arabic outlet Okaz.
According tot he publication, the Kingdom’s Ministry of Justice department is drafting a new process which will offer women more inclusivity and rights in the marriage process which include being present throughout the processing of contracts, ensuring consent and understanding from both sides. They reportedly will also be able to review contracts.
Similarly, women will be able to appoint a guardian to oversee the whole process and they will also be able explicitly state they are happy with their potential life partners.
Since the ascension of Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, many reforms have been passed in the country, and if this motion was to go forward it would be yet another step in the right direction for the Kingdom.
