Get your opera on
Even if you’re not a huge classical fan, we’ve never met anyone not brought to goosebumps by Madam Butterfly. The iconic production is playing for a limited time at Dubai Opera, and is staged by the Welsh National Opera (and they are a nation known for their rich voices). The Italian epic tells the tale of a 1890s Japanese geisha and US Navy officer and, well, let’s just say it’s a weepy.
Dubai Opera, Downtown Dubai. March 2 to 4, 8pm. Tickets from Dhs300. Tel: (04) 440 8888). More information on website.
Want a different dose of culture?
Dubai’s 3D Art Festival has returned for another year (but in a slightly different location), featuring the works of 25 artists. The free-to-attend event should make for a scenic wander before a City Walk dinner, plus there are workshops held during the week for anyone who wants to get in touch with their artistic side.
City Walk, March 1 to 7. 4pm to 10pm weekdays, 10am to 12am weekends. More info on website.
Friday 3
Check out a new laid-back pool day
Dubai isn’t short of a beachy hangout or two, but this one sounds like a sanctuary from bustling city life. Rixos has just opened its El Chiringuito venue (yes, as in the Ibiza institution), and there you’ll find Mediterranean-influenced food, oceanfront cabanas, a kids club, and some electric tunes on a Friday eve. We hear that bougainvillea-draped pool calling…
El Chiringuito, Rixos The Palm, Palm Jumeirah, Dubai, Tues to Sat 10am to 12am, Sun 10am to 6pm, closed Mon. Beach and pool access from Dhs250 per person on weekends, free for women on weekdays, Dhs100 for men on weekdays. Rates vary depending on beds. Tel: (04) 277 9180. thepalmdubai.rixos.com.
