Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.

Well that might be the saying, but we all know it isn’t always true – particularly in the age of social media.

Trolling comments can unfortunately be a familiar sight for Instagram users, particularly those who’ve put time and effort into building up a large following.

But luckily if you’ve got a pesky repeat commenter that’s not so bad you want to block (or you want to keep your numbers up – hey, we don’t judge), there’s a new trick at hand.

An Instagram update has been released today that allows you to automatically filter out inappropriate and unwanted submissions from your comment sections.

So if you want to keep your page PG without the hassle of having to monitor it 24/7, look no further.

What can I filter?

The new keyword filter will allow you to block certain words, phrases, numbers, hashtags and emojis from being used.

The filter will only hide the exact string of characters you enter, so try to be specific.

The default keywords are all English, however custom keywords can be entered in any language.

How do I use it?

  1. Go to your profile and head into the options menu.
  2. Select ‘comments’. You’ll be presented with the option to ‘Hide Inappropriate Comments’.
  3. You can add in custom keywords that you’d like to keep filtered out of your comments. Separate each keyword with a comma.
  4. Any comments containing your selected keywords will be hidden, and will only only be visible to the commenter and the commenter’s followers.
  5. The feature will be implemented on both new and old posts.
  6. If at any point you decide to turn the comment filter off, or remove certain keywords, any comment that contains those keywords will be unhidden.

The new Instagram filter feature isn’t the first big update to have been released this year. Last month saw the launch of Instagram Stories, a Snapchat-esque means of sharing with your followers what you’re up to in a more relaxed fashion.

Whatever you post in your ‘Story’ gets reset after 24 hours, so the content stays fresh for your followers.
