When it come to luscious, thick and shiny hair, Arab women have it down to a tee.

Despite numerous products on the market, many still turn to natural remedies that have been passed down through generations.

These traditional rituals have become embedded in the hair culture of Arab women, and Aashwi Verma, Senior Brand Manager of natural haircare brand Vatika, has narrowed down some of the kitchen staples that you can test out for yourself.

“There are many traditional hair care secrets passed on from teta (grandmother) that still form the basis of many of the hair care routines of an Arab woman,” she says.

Garlic

Garlic has always been very popular in the Arab world to maintain a healthy scalp and hair, and especially in the fight against hair fall out. Garlic’s anti-microbial properties kill germs and bacteria that cause damage to the scalp which in turn blocks hair growth. It also has a high content of vitamin C that promotes hair growth. It stimulates roots and controls hair fall.

Olive

Olive oil is one of the most common ingredients in any Arab household. Rich in antioxidants, as well as vitamins A and E, it helps to lock in moisture and aid in hair growth, preventing hair loss, keeping the scalp healthy and regaining lost hair. Take a little olive oil and massage onto your scalp to promote blood circulation and provide nutrient supply to your hair.

Almonds

Rich in magnesium and nutrients, almond oil locks in moisture and nourishes hair. Abundantly available in the Middle East, almond has been the go-to remedy for natural hair care. It helps to nourish the scalp and strengthen the hair to give silky soft, shiny hair.

Ghergir

Ghergir leaves are widely known to have been used in Arabic culture to improve micro circulation. Oil enriched with ghergir deeply nourishes the hair from root to tips, massage it onto your scalp for thick, strong hair.

Blackseed

They are known as the ‘seeds of blessings’ in the Arab world and for thousands of years, blackseed oil known to strengthen har from within. Blackseed contains various amino acids, fatty acids, minerals and carbohydrates absolutely essential for soft, shiny locks.
