It’s been four days of unrest as the country has only just started to recover from the worst wildfires in decades. Tensions grew as the government announced tax on WhatsApp calls and other messaging services. This was quickly scrapped following an outcry from the public, but now there are new demands to balance the country’s economy that is seeing low growth and high debt.

Award-winning filmmaker Nadine Labaki, singer Nancy Ajram, actress Nadine Nassib Njeim and recording artist Elissa are among the A-list who have pledged their support and called for changes in the country. Some have even joined the protestors on the streets and shared their experiences on Instagram.

“My heart goes out to my country every moment and with every heartbeat,” Tweeted Nancy Ajram. “We are a people who deserves to live and it is our right to live with dignity. May God protect Lebanon.”

Influencer Jessica Kahawaty stood by her fellow countryman in LA and wrote on Instagram: “Shame on every politician pocketing from the people. Haven’t you had enough? Can’t you see that if you give the people what they want they will love you more? Everyone is cursing you. The rich and privileged, the business owners, those economically comfortable should be down on the streets before the poor!”

According to news sources, Lebanon’s Prime Minister, Saad Harir, and his coalition partners have reached an agreement. It is believed to include plans to privatise key utilities, reduce politicians’ salaries and measures to address Lebanon’s budget deficit. They expect the package to be approved today.
