Scent of adventure.
Designer Michael Kors sees fragrance as an extension of his brand. His latest scents Wonderlust and Wonderlust Sublime celebrate the spirit of adventure.
With top notes of almond milk accord, Italian bergamot, Sicilian mandarin and pink pepper balanced with jasmine and sandalwood, Wonderlust is perfect for every day.
Below he shares his thoughts on the fragrance industry as well as the most adventurous thing he has ever done.
Wonderlust is all about escapism, where are you travelling to this summer?
We’re hoping to go to one of my favorite destinations, French Polynesia and also Greece.
Talk us through the inspiration behind the new fragrance, Wonderlust Sublime.
Michael Kors Wonderlust was our first fragrance inspired by the journey more so than a specific destination. For me, Michael Kors Wonderlust represents the romance and adventure of an impromptu escape. With Sublime, it evokes a very specific moment: the time of day when sunlight turns magical, when the warmth is still there and the light glows just before sunset.
What elements of it will resonate with the Middle Eastern customer?
The Michael Kors Wonderlust Sublime woman is well-traveled, sophisticated, glamorous and luxurious, and our Middle East customers share all of these traits.
How should a fragrance make a woman feel?
She should feel confident. I like to think of fragrance as an instant mood changer, and whether she’s spritzing it on to feel more adventurous, spontaneous or glamorous, it should always bring a confidence boost.
Can you remember the first fragrance you ever owned?
I’ve personally never worn a lot of fragrance. Now, I wear one of our Michael Kors Mens fragrances for special occasions.

How do you see the fragrance industry evolving and how are you looking to develop your line?
I think fragrances are an essential extension of fashion. They are inspired by the same things that inspire my collections and they are made for the same customer. I love that fragrances are more accessible, so someone who maybe hasn’t been able to buy a bag or a watch yet can buy the fragrance and connect with the brand.
What is the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
Many adventures come to mind, but if I had to pick one, it would be designing my first collection after Dawn Mello, the then Fashion Director of Bergdorf Goodman, encouraged me to show her my work after seeing my designs in the window of the store where I was working. I literally went home that day and started designing, called her right away and the next thing I knew, I had a trunk show, fans and my own collection.
What has been a standout moment of your career?
I’m very proud of what we have been able to accomplish with our Watch Hunger Stop campaign. We’re working hard in partnership with the United Nations World Food Programme to help achieve a world with zero hunger.
Who do you look to for advice?
The best advice I’ve ever received was from my mother – Keep it simple, keep it comfortable, and stay consistent. I’ve always turned to her when in need of guidance.
Describe the view from your window today.
I’m looking at the Empire State Building, the New York Public Library, the green of Bryant Park and tons of blue sky. Not a bad way to start the day.
Can you share with us your future vision for Michael Kors?
We’ll continue to solve the problems that our customers are encountering in their wardrobes – from gowns that are easy to pack and sweatshirts that feel luxe to fragrances that transport you to exotic places.
