It’s the first Monday of May and the stars have descended on the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the iconic Met Gala 2023.
This year, the industry pays homage to the late designer and visionary Karl Lagerfeld. His influence on the industry covers half a century of fashion — inspired by his incomparable role at multiple fashion houses, celebrities teamed up with designers to showcase their own version of Karl’s design DNA. From Chanel and Fendi to his eponymous label, Karl’s signature aesthetic and iconicism were intelligently infused by all the attendees.
‘Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty’ keeping up with the theme, celebrities allowed elegance to take centre stage. Pearls, bows, tweeds and a sea of ivory was observed on the red carpet today. While paying tribute to the legend that Karl was, designers still managed to retain their individuality, as well as that of the celebrity they were dressing. Case in Point: Kim Kardashian’s all-pearl Schiaparelli look was as a modernised ode to the designer, but also a nostalgic nod to her own fashion moment.
Taking the costume party to a whole new level, actor Jared Leto showed up dressed as Karl’s cat Choupette. Doja Cat on the other hand, took her beauty inspiration from Karl’s furry heir. Celebrities like Alia Bhatt, Anne Hathway, Sydney Sweeney and Priyanka Chopra Jonas took the classic route and kept it minimal-chic.
