Another achievement for women in the Kingdom

It has been announced that Princess Nourah bint Saad acquired Italian football club, Umbrian football club Spoleto. This is a historic moment, as she became the first Saudi woman to be President of a sports club.

After the acquisition, the Princess held a press conference in which she thanked her hosts for the hospitality and outlined her ambitions for the team’s future. “Football is a family passion, and Italian football is followed all over the world. This is why I chose to invest in Umbria,” she said.

“Spoleto is a small, amateur football organisation where it is possible to work with the aim of growing and aiming for promotion. But we cannot fail to consider the value and beauty of the city of Spoleto, which is famous throughout the world.” This purchase marks the Saudi royal family’s second venture into sports club ownership. Prince Abdullah bin Musa’ad co-owns English Premier League football club Sheffield United.

Over the best two years Saudi women have been breaking through the glass celling and not only in the sports industry. Last month, Yasmeen Al Maimani made headlines after becoming the Kingdom’s first female commercial pilot. Six years after obtaining her license from the Saudi Civil Aviation Authority, she accomplished her dream after joining Nesma Airways. Meanwhile, Princess Reema Bint Bandar became the country’s first female ambassador after she was appointed as Saudi’s diplomatic representative to Washington DC in the United States.
