A sad day for the fashion industry

Max Azria, the co-founder of contemporary women’s clothing brand BCBGMAXAZRIA, died at a Houston hospital on Monday, WWD has confirmed. The Tunisian designer, who is one of the biggest names to come out of the L.A. fashion scene, passed away age 70 because of lung cancer.

Max was bron in Sfax, Tunisia and moved with his family to France when he was a teenager. He first started his career in fashion selling jeans imported from America, then managed his parents’ apparel manufacturing business. He then moved to Los Angeles in 1983, where he opened a chain of multibrand retail stores called Jess. Six years later, he founded BCBG, which stands for “bon chic, bon genre,” meaning “good style, good attitude.”

The launch of BCBGMAXAZRIA was successful, with the brand being worn by several celebrities like: Drew Barrymore, Selena Gomez and Kim Kardashian. At the height of his career, Max had over 500 stores worldwide and his clothing was carried in every major department store. Meanwhile his Max Azria Atelier gowns have been worn by celebrities such as Angelina Jolie, Sharon Stone, Fergie and Halle Berry.

As a tribute, we look back at some of the stars who championed his brand:
