Can she play her in a movie?

Last March, comic-book giants Marvel introduced us to a new super-heroine, a Filipino called Wave. Now, more has been revealed about the mysterious character, or more specifically the inspiration behind the character art.

One of the artists involved in the creation of Marvel’s first Filipina superhero, Mico Suayan, revealed that his drawings of the character were based on Pinoy actress Nadine Lustre. On his Facebook account, the artist posted a picture of the 25-year-old actress alongside an image of the character, writing, “A little trivia. I based my rendition of Wave to Nadine.”

After this announcement and their uncanny resemblance, we would love to watch Nadine bring Wave to life. However, it seems like the character’s co-creator, co-illustrator and designer, Leinil Francis Yu, has someone else in mind. Previously, he took to Twitter to reveal that he would love for actress Angel Locsin to play Pearl Pangan (Wave’s alter-ego). We are not surprised by his choice since Angel has played the role of a superhero in the past. The 33-year-old portrayed Darna, a homegrown heroine in the TV adaptation of the Ace Publications character.

Wave was first announced during the SXSW Conference in Austin, Texas. While not much is known about the character, we do know that Wave is a “mysterious Filipino superhero” who comes from the sea. The super-heroine is set to make her debut in War of the Realms: New Agent of Atlas #1, which will be released in May. Comic book readers will follow Wave, as she aims to defend her realm against conquerors.

She is not the first Filipino character in the Marvel universe, but she is the first new release in more than 10 years. She came after the The Triumph Division, who were a group consisting of Philippines’ finest superheroes. Wave is set to join Marvel’s new league of Asian superheroes, which include Aero and Sword Master from China. They will fight dark forces that terrorise the Earth, in a story that is reportedly set in Asia.
