You can’t help but admire Lady Gaga’s work ethic. Although she is currently in the middle of her ArtPop Ball Tour and performing here in Dubai in just over ten days’ time, news broke over the weekend that she will feature alongside jazz legend Tony Bennett in H&M’s 2014 holiday campaign.
As well as starring in the holiday campaign, Lady Gaga will also release a studio video of the track I Can’t Give You Anything But Love, which could be the track featured in the H&M television ad from the duo’s upcoming jazz album, Cheek To Cheek.
Global clothing retailer H&M will feature the diva and the 88-year-old crooner in a print, online and television campaign to be released at the end of November. Several behind-the-scenes images were released of the pair posing for the print campaign – Tony Bennett looking his usual dashing self in a black tuxedo with red pocket square and Gaga in an oversized H&M beige chunky-knit sweater, fishnet stockings, bold and golden seventies-inspired make-up and the most glorious black curly wig, which could only have been inspired by Cher.
While Lady Gaga’s relationship with H&M dates back to November 2013 when she ceremoniously opened their Time Square, New York City store, her partnership with Bennett goes back quite a bit further. Back in 2011 Bennett, impressed after hearing Lady Gaga’s rendition of Nat King Cole’s Orange Colored Sky, asked her to perform a duet of Lady Is A Tramp that featured on his Duets II album.
Although there is a large age and cultural gap between the two, they have an unique musical chemistry that is hard not to love. Clearly something that H&M recognised and are now cleverly trying to capitalise on. And who doesn’t love a bit of jazz in the festive season?
As Bennett affectionately told Rolling Stone: “She phrases like I phrase. She’s a wonderful singer. Everybody knows and loves her very much. I think when they hear this album that we’re doing, they’re going to say, ‘we had no idea that she sings that well.’”
Lady Gaga will be performing at the Meydan Racecource on the September 10, and her duet album with Tony Bennett, Cheek To Cheek, is due for release on September 23.
