Get to know Khadijah Mellah.

Britain’s first female Muslim jockey made history by winning the charity Magnolia Cup at Glorious Goodwood.

Khadijah Mellah is believed to be the first person in the UK to appear in a competitive horse race while wearing a hijab, beating experienced jockeys such as Olympic cyclist Victoria Pendleton and model Vogue Williams.

What makes this win even more special is the fact that the 18-year-old only started riding race horses four months ago and this was her first competitive event.

“Ambitious women can make it and that is what I want to represent,” she told The Times. “I’ve had so much support and I can’t wait to see other stories of other women doing the same.”

Muslim Women’s Sport Foundation reported that there has only been a handful of female British Muslim jockeys, Mellah’s win has a potential to inspire change.
