How to travel in style according to Deborah Lloyd, the president and creative director of Kate Spade New York.

Travelling is more than a passion of mine; it’s a way of life. There are always places to go and people to see. I find the greatest inspiration for my designs come from my travels to new and exciting places. I love to experience new cultures and take in the sights and sounds of exotic locations. The collection this summer was inspired by my recent travels to South America – Rio de Janeiro is one of most vibrant cities that I’ve visited so far.

I always try to make the most of my time when travelling. I usually visit multiple cities during my trip, trying to take in as much as I can, so travelling light is a necessity. I believe in the classic ideal of dressing up for the airport but still being comfortable on long flights. There’s nothing like arriving at a destination feeling put together, ready to take on a new city. In my hand luggage I always carry essentials including a cashmere wrap, a pair of flats and my iPad in a sleek and spacious tote; my favourite is the Kate Spade New York 2 Park Avenue Babe.

When I pack for trips I choose a colour palette to guide me in packing pieces that can easily be mixed and matched. The trick to packing minimally is focusing on key pieces and packing great accessories like shoes and costume jewellery. Sometimes I just add a cocktail ring or statement necklace to instantly transform my outfit.

My summer style is versatile and simple. Whether I’m at the beach or exploring flea markets, I rely on essentials like an oversized sun hat, a great pair of sunglasses, and a tote that I can take anywhere. Crisp white pieces are a summer staple, whether it’s a button-up shirt or a sundress. In New York it’s all about breaking away from wearing black and grey. Wearing bright colours or mixing bold patterns and graphic prints are the easiest ways to create a seasonal look for any occasion. I always finish my look off with a pop of coral, whether it’s lipstick or nail polish. Summer style should be fun and effortless, so I always dress with for the possibility of an unexpected adventure.
