Emirati fine jewellery designer, Salama Khalfan, on her meticulous approach to creating timeless pieces.

What do your first 30 mins of the day look like, your morning routine?

Typically what I do as soon as I wake up is I rehydrate and start the day by drinking plenty of water. Then I take a quick shower and get ready either for yoga or a run. I do yoga three times a week and run three times a week, I usually have one day off in between. After all of this, I then go on to have a big breakfast.

How did your journey into jewellery design begin?

I was in a transitional phase in my life that required me to take a step back. Upon reflection and careful planning, I pivoted to a line of work that would give me room to be creative which was something I always had inside me. Jewellery has always been a big part of my life, from the admiring eyes of a child to the appreciative heart of a woman, I wanted to capitalise on my love for creation. It was a natural outcome and conclusion.

The Starflake – can you introduce us to your new collection?

The Starflake collection is easy to wear, easy to layer and is lots of fun. With many of the earrings sold in singles – you can add stars, play with asymmetrical designs, connect chains and more. It’s all about adding your own individual taste and style. From equestrian-themed bracelets to fan-shaped pieces, everything is unique.

Where do you take your inspiration from?

There’s always a source of inspiration and every collection has its own story. I have a sheer sense and thirst for discovery and I love exploring new things – whether it’s an experience, a place, or meeting new people. I feel very much inspired by everything that discovery reveals around me. Travel also serves as a great form of inspiration.

You also create bespoke pieces – is this something you’ve done from the outset?

Yes, we always aim to give clients a high-quality product with a personal touch or connection. We love getting involved in their special occasions and making them feel that we are there for them whenever they need us.

Are there any precious stones you particularly enjoy working with?

I love diamonds to start with, but I also believe in the energy of natural stones. Right now, I am doing a lot of work with natural citrines imported from Brazil. Your pieces are quite intricate and often colourful.

How would you recommend they should be worn?

My pieces are created in a way that does not impose a specific style on the wearer. I like to leave that to the person wearing it. It’s important to me that my pieces are perceived as a tool of expression rather than a tool of direction.

How do you ensure you maintain a clear vision, despite the challenges?

I just stay focused on the end result, what I aspire to achieve and remind myself that a little effort continuously every day is better than no effort at all. The secret lies in recognizing small wins, discipline, and habit.
